By Ariele Pittalà, yoga teacher and founder of the yoga training center in Castel del Monte.
At Isytravel, we carefully select authentic experiences led by passionate local professionals who can convey the true essence of a place and holistic wellness practices. In this article, Ariele Pittalà, a certified yoga instructor and expert guide, tells us why his yoga retreat in Abruzzo, set in the heart of the Gran Sasso National Park, is a truly transformative experience.
A Weekend of Yoga, Meditation, and Nature in the Heart of Abruzzo
Our three-day, two-night yoga retreat was created to offer a fully immersive experience, combining daily yoga practice, moments of zazen meditation, and light hikes through the breathtaking landscapes of Gran Sasso. We welcome guests from all over Italy — and often from abroad — who are seeking balance, vitality, and a deep reconnection with themselves. Each day includes vinyasa flow yoga, hatha yoga, and meditation sessions, paired with carefully curated nature walks designed to awaken the senses and quiet the mind. I firmly believe in the transformative power of the natural environment: breathing in the mountain air, watching the sunrise over the gentle hills, practicing yoga outdoors… all these elements have a profound impact on both body and awareness.
Castel del Monte: Where Practice Meets Landscape
After living in Rome, Bologna, and Paris, I chose Castel del Monte, in the heart of Abruzzo, as the perfect place to establish a yoga training school and host wellness retreats focused on personal growth. Here, the Abruzzo mountains become allies in your inner journey: medieval villages, the ancient forests of Voltigno, panoramic trails that stretch the view all the way to the sea — they are all part of the experience. You don’t need to tackle steep climbs or extreme hikes; the magic lies in simplicity and slowing down.
A Yoga Studio With a View Over Rocca Calascio
The retreat takes place at B&B Bacca Blu in Villa Santa Lucia, a welcoming and tranquil location. The fully glass-enclosed yoga studio offers sweeping views over Rocca Calascio and Monte Sirente, creating the perfect atmosphere for deep listening, inner peace, and mindful connection. Throughout the stay, we alternate physical practice with shared reflection and dialogue. To me, yoga is not just about movement; it’s about philosophy, study, and exchange. My approach is multidisciplinary, blending elements of art, literature, art history, and holistic medicine.
Silent Walks and Meditation in Nature
During our hikes, I invite participants to minimize conversation. This is not about being strict; rather, it’s because intentional silence is key to engaging the senses. In silence, the landscape speaks, thoughts quiet down, and you create space to connect with your own center. The real goal of these experiences is not simply “doing yoga” but being yoga: living each moment fully, without filters, allowing every breath, every step, every gaze to help you regain balance, inner strength, and serenity.
An Invitation to Reconnect
Choosing a yoga retreat in Abruzzo, surrounded by the beauty of the Gran Sasso National Park, is much more than just a break — it’s an opportunity to return to yourself, rediscover your natural rhythm, and look inward with greater clarity. The answers you’re seeking are already within you. You just need the right place to help you listen.
