Explore Sicily by Bike: Journey Through the Val di Noto's Baroque and Nature

Starting Point: Piazza Armerina

Our journey began in Piazza Armerina, famous for its medieval streets and the stunning Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through its mosaics felt like traveling back in time, immersing ourselves in the daily life of ancient Romans. From here, we continued cycling along secondary roads through the Sicilian countryside, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, reaching Caltagirone, the city of ceramics. The iconic Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, with its 142 steps decorated with hand-painted ceramics, enchanted us with its vibrant colors and history, reflected in every artisan workshop in the center.

Ragusa: Baroque and Nature

The hills guided us to Ragusa, through the Bosco di Santo Pietro Nature Reserve, a green oasis perfect for a nature break. Arriving in Ragusa Ibla was magical: between Baroque churches, wrought-iron balconies, and the majestic San Giorgio Cathedral, we strolled through the Ibleo Garden. The evening ended with a dinner featuring authentic Sicilian dishes, including pasta alla Norma and fresh ricotta-covered sweets.

Modica and Scicli: The Charm of Chocolate and Baroque

The next day, we headed to Modica, a city famous for its artisanal chocolate, made following an ancient Aztec recipe. We tasted Modican chocolate, an intense sensory experience, flavored with spices like cinnamon and chili. From there, we descended to Scicli, a Baroque town that turned golden at sunset. Walking through its historic center felt like being on a movie set, and it’s no coincidence that many locations from the TV series "Inspector Montalbano" were filmed here.

Marina di Ragusa and Marzamemi: Sea and Tradition

After reaching the sea at Marina di Ragusa, we relaxed with the sea breeze and stunning views. Along the coast, we stopped at Punta Secca, famous for the "Faro di Montalbano," before heading to Marzamemi, a charming fishing village with a historic tuna processing plant and pastel-colored houses. We were welcomed for a sunset aperitif, with the sound of the waves as our soundtrack.

Vendicari Nature Reserve and Noto: Authentic Sicily

An unmissable stop was the Vendicari Nature Reserve, an untouched oasis where time seems to slow down. We cycled through salt pans and wetlands, spotting flamingos and herons resting during their migration. The crystal-clear waters and golden sand beaches invited us to take a refreshing dip. Next, we visited Noto, the Baroque capital of Sicily, with its San Nicolò Cathedral, the Tina Di Lorenzo Theater, and the Palazzo Nicolaci, famous for its balconies decorated with masks and mythological figures. Strolling along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, we tasted an almond granita and sampled Nero d’Avola, the region’s iconic wine.

Syracuse: History and Sea

The final stop was Syracuse, a city with over 3,000 years of history. After a stop at the Cava Grande del Cassibile Nature Reserve, where we enjoyed a last hike among natural ponds and spectacular canyons, we arrived in Ortigia, the ancient heart of Syracuse. Its narrow streets, Baroque churches, and centuries-old buildings fascinated us. Here, in the picturesque squares and tranquil atmosphere, we concluded our journey with a plate of fresh fish and a glass of Nero d’Avola, toasting to an adventure that gave us unforgettable emotions and views.

Cycling in Sicily: A Unique Experience

Cycling in Sicily is an experience that leaves a mark. It’s not just a journey through extraordinary places, but an immersion into the culture, flavors, and stories of an island with so much to share. This itinerary allowed us to discover the Southern Sicily, combining the joy of discovery with the freedom to cycle through a timeless landscape.
