The day begins with a hearty breakfast before starting your adventure from Wallsend, easily reachable by metro from Newcastle. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the Roman fort of Segedunum, which marks the beginning of Hadrian's Wall. You’ll continue along the River Tyne, passing through picturesque landscapes and crossing under the famous Millennium Bridge, which connects to the modern Baltic Arts Centre in Gateshead. The path winds westward, with the scenery gradually changing as you approach the village of Heddon-on-the-Wall, where you'll spend the night. Dinner is free, and overnight stay at Heddon-on-the-Wall in one of the following accommodations: Houghton North Farm, Hadrians Barn B&B, or Heddon Lodge.

After a hearty breakfast, begin your walk from Heddon-on-the-Wall towards Chollerford. Today, the landscape will bring you closer to the Roman fortifications, which become increasingly prominent. Initially, the most visible feature is the Vallum, the ditch that ran alongside Hadrian's Wall. As you approach Chollerford, the first sections of the Roman Wall begin to emerge, revealing the grandeur of this impressive structure. Along the way, you'll also have the chance to admire a Roman bridge crossing the River North Tyne, located just southwest of the current crossing. This five-arched bridge, built in 1775, is a notable historical point of interest. Dinner is free, and overnight stay in Chollerford at one of the following accommodations: Hadrian Hotel or The George Hotel.

After a morning breakfast, begin your walk from Chollerford to Once Brewed. Today’s route will take you past the Chesters Museum, an important testament to the Roman fortifications, before ascending to Tower Tye along the Roman road. As you continue, you will encounter some of the most spectacular sections of Hadrian's Wall, offering magnificent views of the wild countryside and Roman ruins. The fortifications and towers lining the trail will give you a sense of the grandeur of the ancient wall. Upon reaching Housesteads Fort, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the museum, which provides insight into Roman life in this area. The stage concludes at Steel Rigg Peel Crags, a scenic viewpoint just a short distance from the village of Once Brewed. Dinner is free, and overnight stay in Once Brewed/Hexham at one of the following accommodations: Twice Brewed Inn, Vallum Lodge, or Saughy Rigg Farm.

After a hearty breakfast, begin your day’s walk from Once Brewed towards Banks or Walton. You will ascend to Winshields Crags, the highest point of the Hadrian's Wall Path, where breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside await you. Continuing from Gilsland, you will follow a beautiful section of the Roman wall that leads you to Birdoswald, one of the best-preserved Roman forts. From here, the path climbs up the hill towards Banks and then gently stretches through farmland to Walton, where you will conclude the stage. Dinner is free, and overnight stay in Banks at one of the following accommodations: Bush Nook or Lanercost Equestrian & Country.

After a hearty breakfast, you will begin your walk through a beautiful section of rural countryside, following the peaceful banks of the River Eden towards Carlisle. Travel Tour Overview

The Hadrian's Wall Path offers a unique opportunity to cross the heart of Northern England, following one of the most captivating stretches of historical and natural heritage in Great Britain. The trail follows the remains of one of the largest Roman fortifications, Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire and today stands as an important historical and archaeological testament.

The 135 km (84 miles) long route stretches from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, passing through several regions of Northern England, including Northumberland and the North Pennines. Along the way, the landscape constantly changes, moving from gentle hills and green fields to more rugged and rocky areas, crossing vast natural spaces, small villages, and historically rich cities such as Newcastle and Carlisle. Each day offers the opportunity to approach a part of Roman history, with Roman fortifications, forts, and museums dotted along the route, including Housesteads Fort and the Chesters Museum. Roman history merges with the natural beauty of cliffs and rivers, creating an experience that blends nature, culture, and history. The entire trail follows the historic path of the Roman wall, which remains clearly visible, especially in the central section, allowing visitors to retrace the road once laid out by the Romans. The Hadrian's Wall Path is suitable for those with an average fitness level, with the section between Chollerford and Birdoswald being the most challenging, but still easily navigable without major difficulties. The trail is well-marked and provides the opportunity to be customized for those seeking a longer or shorter experience, with the support of luggage transport services and accommodation options along the route.

If you're looking for a hike that combines the natural beauty of Northern Britain with the historical richness of the Roman Empire, the Hadrian's Wall Path is the ideal route. With the option to tailor the itinerary to your needs, this walking adventure allows you to experience Roman history while crossing enchanting landscapes, far from the bustle of the most well-known tourist destinations.
